Activated carbon has been widely used in water purification due to its high adsorption rates and capabilities. The inherent drawback of carbon materials, however, is that they have excellent biocompatibility with bacteria. Bacteria breed on carbon during the purification process and when left overnight, thus making carbon materials themselves pollutants. To address this problem, some researchers have explored depositing colloidal-sized silver and silver powder (silver nitrate) a wide-spectrum antibacterial onto the carbon as bactericides.
Testing and experiments showed there are a number of problems with this approach. First at all, the silver coated activated carbon has limited antibacterial activity. Secondly, high temperatures required for carbonizing and activating activated carbon fibers cause silver particles to coalesce and form large particles that have inferior antibacterial activities. Thirdly, severe attrition of silver particles not only cause antibacterial activities to deteriorate, but may potentially cause “Argyria” as well.
At NSM®, we’ve developed a new kind of antibacterial substance which is safe and effective. It is done by coating SilverSol® ( an antibacterial coating agent produced using the latest nanotechnology from pure silver (Ag 99.99%). The silver is electromagneted by using high voltage to dissolve it into water .)
The antibacterial activities were evaluated and tested against total bacterial count and compared with normal carbon and other forms of silver coated carbon. The result of the experiments proved the effectiveness of SilverSol® as an antibacterial coating agent and the effectiveness of SilverSol® Coated Carbon to eliminate and control the grow of bacteria in the carbon by more than 99% effective (See Test Report).
This suggested that SilverSol® antibacterial agent and SilverSol® Coated Activated Carbon are highly effective and efficient bactericides. Below is a comparison of the characteristics between the usage of SilverSol® and the commonly used Silver Nitrate as antibacterial coating agent.

The efficiency of a particular carbon will be influenced by the granular size, such efficiency increases as the size decreases. However, there is limit as to the size to be used due to the pressure drop restrictions.
The most common sieve sizes are tabulated below in their metric form, and compare to the British and American standards.
